Recession: A Stinging, Lingering Sore Spot for Doctors and Hospitals

Recession? What recession?

For anyone willing to believe the “authoritative sources,” the Great Recession ended a little more than two years ago. We’re having trouble finding anyone who believes it’s all behind us; including (perhaps especially) doctors, hospitals and other medical professionals.

A lot of healthcare providers feel the recession is still impacting them directly. This financial fact of life hit us squarely between the eyes (again) this week.

Here’s what happened. (Keep in mind this was only yesterday, Tuesday.)

We published a special offer that read in part, Win New Patients Now, Despite the Recession. Our closeout on this DVD product was sold out within minutes. Minutes. That says to us that doctors and other healthcare professionals are still stinging from this “period of reduced economic activity."

The quick back-story is that we previously sold thousands of an educational DVD. We are not going to reprint this older, but successful, product in order to make room for next year’s new lineup. This was an attractive closeout offer, and it was gone in mere minutes.

Clearly, many medical professionals have yet to benefit from the reported economic recovery. (If you see a different meaning here, please let us know.)

Physicians, surgeons and healthcare providers are not alone in this. We all would like to remain optimistic about the nation’s economic future, but a Gallup poll earlier this year found that more than half of all Americans think the US is still in recession or even depression. (See Reuters. 2011-04-28).

We recalled Stewart Gandolf’s insightful post, The First Step To Dealing With Our “New Normal” Is Acceptance, where he wrote recently: “To this day, I cannot think of a single client who has told us he or she wants to market in order to take advantage of the “better economy.”

Sorry, but the DVD is gone. We truly are sold out.
